getting up the mountain

Hi Reader,

How are you? Please, come in. Have a seat. I'll take your raincoat. The weather's been all over the place lately.

These innocuous-looking white flowers on the table are bloodroot. Don't break the stems—the sap is poisonous. What a sword & sorcery flower.

Last week, I went to GAMA Expo as a Horizons Fellow. "GAMA" is the Game Manufacturers' Association, and "GAMA Expo" is a professional conference of retailers, publishers, and distributors. The Horizons Fellowship is part of GAMA's DEI initiative. They kept saying "DEI" all the time, too, just to tick off people in Washington.

It was pretty sweet. People celebrated us, I made friends, and GAMA covered most of our costs. I got to tell tons of people that Defy the Gods is coming soon.

However, I think I have to push back the date of the Kickstarter, by about a month. There's just too much to do, and I'm running out of time.

  • I have to nail down every physical and digital thing I plan to offer, how I'll get them, and what they'll cost. I've got a lot of it, but I need to dial it in.
  • I also have to get more sign-ups for the Kickstarter! If you're on the fence, please sign up! Go to https://prelaunch.hecticelectron.com. And if you've already signed up, please tell your friends. Spread the word far and wide.

It's been all Defy the Gods for me all the time. I've started a "megathread" on Blue Sky where I talk about it—the themes, the mechanics, and best of all, all the people who helped me make it. You can see it here.

Next week, I'll be a special guest at Breakout Con in Toronto. I'm running Defy the Gods of course, but I'm also planning to playtest my Toronto Expansion for Raccoon Sky Pirates, with a raccoon-eye view of the city. It's a challenge to make raccoons in Toronto more over the top than they already are. My current idea is that the coyotes and seagulls band together to challenge the raccoons for control of Toronto.

Should be a blast! If you're going to the con, I hope I see you there!

Cheers,
Chris

P.S. That sign-up page again: https://prelaunch.hecticelectron.com. Okay thanks! :)

Hi Reader, Welcome! Please, come in. I've put some pink daylilies in a vase for Pride month. Daylilies—pretty, but impossible to kill. We're all saying "Happy Pride!" with extra daylily-determination this year. It's a happy Pride, but with grit. Before it was a party, Pride was a protest. sorcerer discovering the occult properties of the rainbow And 5,000 years before that, in a land you build at the table, it was a battlecry against the gods! If you can't tell, I'm pumped to be re-launching...

Defy the Gods: Smoldering Queer Sword and Sorcery

Hi Reader, Welcome to my regular newsletter! It's a cheery place where we can talk about games and good vibes. I land in your inbox somewhere between once a week and once a month. Please, come in. Sit down. I've put a bunch of garden stars-of-Bethlehem in a bowl of cold water. There's a bowl of dice next to them. Don't put your hand in the wrong one! Tuesday, June 10th is my target date to relaunch Defy the Gods on Kickstarter. That gives us two weeks. With that ramping up, I'm getting into...

Hi Reader, Welcome! It's good to see you again. Please, sit down. All the irises are in bloom, so I've put a few in a cut-glass vase. Spring is in its full glory. It's on a beautiful day like today that I had to cancel the original Defy the Gods Kickstarter. So close you can taste it It just wasn't going to hit its goal. Not the way I'd set it up. Valiant backers (like you) kept pledging, even as it became clear it wasn't going to clear the tree-line. I admit it, I got cocky. My raccoon...
